My mom has a red eared slider turtle that she has kept in a bowl for close to 4 years, what health problems...?
is it likely to have? I've read that this particular species of turtle is pretty robust. She found it at work. It is now about 3.5 inches in diameter and has been living in a large glass salad bowl with tap water, no heater and no UVA/UVB lamp (i know...) She uses the excuse "well it's lived this long hasn't it". So I'm getting her a 55 gallon full turtle tank setup for Christmas. Besides a floating log, heater, lamps, canister filter etc is there anything else it's going to need? Any types of supplements after being without the necessities for so long? Are there special water conditioners or treatments for RES turtles? Has this poor living condition shortened the overall life expectancy of the turtle? Any help is appreciated.
OK, a third opinion. I don't like gravel, rocks, or floating logs. I suggest a bare-bottomed tank with a slab of wood wedged in at a slight angle. The bottom provides a hide-away, the middle forms a ramp, and the top is a place to bask. I don't worry about tap water. I figure that if I can drink it, a turtle can swim in it. You might want to leave the water in an open container at least overnight, so the chlorine can dissipate.
After being cramped for 4 yr, the turtle might put on a growth spurt. While adults usually eat about half plant and half animal matter, you might want to lean more toward animal matter to provide enough protein and calcium. Good sources are earthworms, bait fishes, and strips of liver dusted in bone meal. You may want to start at no more than 25% plant matter (less, if it has never had any), primarily dark green leafy vegetables. Pellets should be a supplement, not a main food.
